Interim Head of Digital Governance
Outside IR35 Contract Up to 12 Months £750 per day Hybrid – London (min 2 days per week onsite)
An outstanding opportunity has arisen for an experienced Interim Head of Digital Governance to join a large, complex, purpose-led organisation undergoing significant digital and cultural change. This is a genuine greenfield opportunity to establish and embed a Digital Governance capability from the ground up.
Following a period of transformation, the organisation has a highly engaged and enthusiastic Digital team with a strong desire to improve. However, there is now a requirement to introduce greater structure, consistency, governance and control across the technology environment. You will act as a trusted advisor to the leadership team, bringing experience of what good looks like and helping the organisation mature its approach to technology governance, risk, controls, standards and decision-making.
This is not about implementing unnecessary process or applying a framework for the sake of it. The requirement is for someone who can assess the current environment, identify what is needed, select the right approach and establish practical governance that enables the organisation to operate effectively.
This is about building capability, embedding discipline and leaving behind a sustainable operating model.
The Role Responsibilities will include:
Reviewing the current technology governance landscape and assessing maturity. Building upon initial gap analysis work already undertaken. Determining the most appropriate governance frameworks, controls and operating model required. Establishing an enterprise-wide Digital Governance capability. Creating clear technology policies, standards and processes. Introducing practical controls that improve consistency without creating unnecessary bureaucracy. Developing ITSM governance practices and ensuring clear ownership and accountability. Creating effective change governance and decision-making structures. Improving risk management, audit readiness and assurance processes. Providing governance around technology investment, procurement and supplier decisions. Supporting effective management and control of the technology estate. Establishing reporting, measurement and oversight processes. Providing governance around emerging technologies including the responsible adoption of AI.The role has similarities to creating an Office of the CIO capability — establishing the guardrails, frameworks and disciplines that enable technology teams to deliver effectively while remaining controlled, compliant and aligned to organisational objectives.
About You. You will bring experience of:
Building IT/Digital governance frameworks and operating models. Establishing governance capability in immature or changing environments. Working within complex, highly regulated environments where governance, compliance, risk and assurance are critical. Applying recognised governance approaches and best practice frameworks (for example ITIL, ISO, COBIT, TOGAF or similar). Understanding when and how different frameworks should be applied. ITSM principles and technology service governance. Risk management, controls and audit processes. Policy creation and lifecycle management. Technology standards and assurance. Change governance and decision controls. Supplier, procurement and commercial governance. Working closely with senior technology and business stakeholders.Experience gained within organisations with a strong social purpose, public responsibility or customer/community focus would be highly beneficial. You will understand what good governance looks like and have the ability to translate best practice into something pragmatic, proportionate and appropriate for the organisation.
Leadership Style.
Calm, credible and approachable. Able to operate as a trusted advisor. Collaborative rather than process-driven. Comfortable educating teams on why governance matters. Able to influence senior stakeholders. Confident constructively challenging decisions where required. Focused on enabling delivery rather than slowing it down.Your objective is to establish the Digital Governance function, put your stamp on the approach and create a sustainable capability that can ultimately transition successfully to a permanent appointment. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys building something from scratch, creating structure and leaving behind a meaningful legacy.
