NoSQL DB Migration Specialist - Legacy to NoSQL
London/Hybrid - 2 days per week onsite
£420 per day - Outside IR35
Contract
We are seeking a hands-on Azure Cosmos DB Migration Specialist to support the investigation and modernisation of a Legacy enterprise application.
The central requirement is proven experience delivering a migration from a traditional relational database-such as SQL Server or Oracle-into Azure Cosmos DB.
This is not a standard Data Analyst, BI, reporting or general ETL position. Applicants must have personally contributed to the technical design and execution of a relational-to-Cosmos DB migration and be able to discuss the project in detail at interview.
Essential experience
Hands-on delivery of a production migration from a relational SQL database into Azure Cosmos DB.
Analysing Legacy relational schemas, tables, keys, relationships, constraints, indexes and stored procedures.
Redesigning relational data structures for a NoSQL/document database architecture.
Selecting and implementing suitable Cosmos DB partition keys, document structures and indexing strategies.
Understanding denormalisation, embedding, referencing and data-distribution considerations within Cosmos DB.
Building or contributing to the extraction, transformation and loading process between the Legacy database and Cosmos DB.
Migrating or redesigning Embedded database and application business logic.
Validating and reconciling source and target data to demonstrate migration accuracy.
Investigating application-to-database interactions, integrations, interfaces and external dependencies.
Producing clear technical documentation covering the current-state system, migration mappings, transformation rules and target data model.
Advanced SQL skills across SQL Server, Oracle or another enterprise relational database.
The assignment
You will investigate a poorly documented Legacy application and its underlying relational database to establish how the system, data structures and Embedded business rules currently operate.
You will document the existing schemas, relationships, data flows, application dependencies and business logic before helping define how the data should be restructured and migrated into Azure Cosmos DB.
Deliverables are expected to include:
Current-state technical data manuals.
Schema inventories and data dictionaries.
Entity-relationship and data-flow diagrams.
Application and database dependency documentation.
Source-to-target mappings.
Transformation and validation rules.
Relational-to-Cosmos DB data-model documentation.
Data-reconciliation and migration-assurance outputs.
You will work closely with architects, developers, database specialists, business analysts and subject-matter experts to validate findings and support the migration and modernisation programme.
Application requirement
Your CV must clearly identify at least one project where you personally migrated data from a relational SQL database into Azure Cosmos DB.
Please include:
The source database and Legacy application.
The Cosmos DB API and target data model used.
Your personal responsibilities.
The migration approach and tooling.
How partitioning, relationships and validation were handled.
The outcome of the migration.
General Azure experience, Cosmos DB exposure, database administration, reporting, BI development or migrations between relational databases will not be sufficient without direct relational-to-Cosmos DB migration experience.
