Synergetic is recruiting a senior, hands-on Java developer on behalf of a leading consultancy. You'll join a major central government programme that is replacing a critical system. The Legacy code is more than 30 years old, and the replacement is being built on Java, Spring Boot, Angular and PostgreSQL.

You'll act as the client's technical lead on code quality and delivery. You'll get into the delivery partner's codebase, designs and pipelines, judge what is being built and how well, and then explain that clearly to Product Managers, Delivery Managers and programme leadership. We need a strong engineer who can communicate, not a governance specialist.

What You'll Do

• Review code, designs and architecture decisions from the delivery partner, and challenge them where quality, maintainability or approach falls short
• Assess engineering practice, including code structure, testing, database changes and release readiness
• Work alongside Technical Architects and the supplier's engineering teams to resolve technical issues and steer delivery
• Review epics, user stories and acceptance criteria for technical soundness and completeness
• Contribute to Agile ceremonies as the senior technical voice in the room
• Turn technical findings into clear, practical risks and recommendations for non-technical stakeholders

Essential

• Extensive commercial development experience in Java and Spring Boot, recent and hands-on
• Strong Front End skills in Angular and TypeScript
• Strong database skills: PostgreSQL, PL/SQL and Flyway
• Experience of leading development teams or acting as senior technical lead on complex delivery
• Solid grasp of Domain-Driven Design, clean code and testing practice
• Experience with code reviews, pull request workflows and CI/CD pipelines
• Confident communicator who can challenge a supplier constructively and explain technical issues to any audience
• Active SC clearance (essential)

Desirable

• Legacy modernisation or system replacement experience
• Public sector or justice sector background
• Previous assurance, technical due diligence or client-side technical lead roles

Working Arrangements

Hybrid working, with occasional visits to client premises in central, London.
