Lead AI Engineer - UK Remote - Contract

Our client is building a next-generation AI-first platform and is seeking a hands-on Lead AI Engineer to help shape both the technology vision and technical delivery.

This is an opportunity for a Lead AI Engineer who combines deep engineering expertise with an entrepreneurial mindset. You'll work closely with stakeholders, architects and developers to design and build intelligent solutions that challenge traditional enterprise software approaches.

We're looking for someone who sees AI as more than a feature. Someone who believes modern platforms should be built around intelligent workflows, agents, automation and focused micro-applications rather than large, monolithic systems.

What You'll Do

• Design and build AI-powered capabilities using Azure AI Foundry, Azure OpenAI and .NET.
• Develop agentic workflows and orchestration patterns to automate and streamline complex business processes.
• Architect ecosystems of focused micro-applications and services that work together through APIs, events and AI-driven workflows.
• Build secure, scalable and auditable AI solutions suitable for enterprise environments.
• Work directly with stakeholders to identify opportunities where AI can transform how work gets done.
• Prototype rapidly, validate ideas and evolve successful concepts into production solutions.
• Establish approaches for AI governance, evaluation and continuous improvement.

What We're Looking For

• Strong experience delivering production AI solutions on Azure.
• Excellent .NET engineering and cloud architecture experience.
• Hands-on expertise with Azure AI Foundry, Azure OpenAI and modern LLM technologies.
• Experience with RAG, vector search, embeddings and agent frameworks.
• A collaborative approach and the ability to engage confidently with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• A startup mentality with a willingness to challenge conventional thinking.
• Someone who brings ideas, not just implementation.
• A natural problem solver who enjoys tackling complex business and technical challenges.
• Experience implementing verification, evaluation and guardrail mechanisms to ensure AI outputs are reliable, explainable and trustworthy.
• A strong belief that AI-generated outputs should be validated and evidenced rather than accepted at face value.

The Opportunity

This Lead AI Engineer will play a key role in helping our client break away from traditional software thinking, leveraging AI, intelligent automation, micro-services and modern cloud architecture to create a genuinely innovative platform from the ground up.

This is a contract position for a short initial period that is likely to be extended multiple times. Outside IR35 - Up to £500 per day.
