Data Architect - Insurance Domain

Location: London
Working Pattern: Hybrid - 2-3 days per week onsite
Contract: Contract
Rate: £350/day Outside IR35

We're looking for an experienced Data Architect with strong insurance domain expertise to join a major data modernisation programme in London.

This is a hands-on architecture role focused on designing and modernising enterprise data platforms using SQL/PostgreSQL, supporting key insurance functions including policy administration, claims, underwriting, billing, brokers, risk and reinsurance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end data architecture across transactional, analytical and reporting environments

  • Design conceptual, logical and physical data models

  • Lead PostgreSQL/SQL database architecture, optimisation and modernisation

  • Define data migration strategies and integration patterns

  • Design database schemas, data flows and enterprise data structures

  • Work with business stakeholders, Data Engineers, Product Owners and Enterprise Architects

  • Establish data governance, quality, metadata, lineage, security and retention standards

  • Optimise database performance, indexing, partitioning and complex SQL queries

  • Provide technical leadership and architectural guidance to engineering teams

  • Support Legacy database modernisation and migration initiatives

Essential Experience

  • Proven experience as a Data Architect, Database Architect or Senior Data Modeller

  • Strong insurance domain experience - essential

  • Practical experience with insurance data across claims, underwriting, policy administration, billing, brokers, risk, exposure or reinsurance

  • Strong hands-on PostgreSQL experience

  • Advanced SQL, including complex queries, stored procedures, functions, indexing, partitioning and performance tuning

  • Strong conceptual, logical and physical data modelling experience

  • Experience with data warehousing, ETL/ELT, data integration and data migration

  • Strong understanding of data governance, metadata, lineage, data quality and security

  • Experience working within large, complex and highly regulated data environments

  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills

Desirable Experience

  • ACORD or equivalent insurance data standards

  • AWS Aurora PostgreSQL, RDS or Azure Database for PostgreSQL

  • SQL Server ? PostgreSQL migration and modernisation

  • Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift, Synapse or Microsoft Fabric

  • Informatica, Talend, dbt, Airflow, SSIS or AWS Glue

  • Master Data Management/Reference Data Management

  • CI/CD and DevOps/DataOps practices

  • Insurance regulatory, privacy, retention and operational resilience requirements

The Key Requirement

Insurance domain experience is vital.

We're specifically looking for candidates who have worked directly with insurance data and processes, particularly claims, policies, underwriting, billing, brokers, risk or reinsurance.
