Overview:

  • Data Custodians are responsible for the day-to-day management, protection and governance of business data within an assigned business domain. The role combines technical data knowledge with operational governance responsibilities, acting as the bridge between business users, data teams and Information & Knowledge Management teams.
  • Candidates are likely to have experience in data architecture, data engineering, data analysis, data management or related disciplines. Some positions will suit experienced data professionals looking to move into business-facing data leadership roles, whilst others are suitable for earlier-career individuals with a strong technical aptitude and an interest in data management and governance.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Power Automate and similar data management platforms is desirable. Familiarity with BlueJay or comparable collaboration platforms would be advantageous.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the data custodian for an assigned business domain, developing an understanding of how business data is created, used, shared, retained and protected
  • Create and maintain data catalogues, data dictionaries, business glossaries and related metadata, ensuring information remains accurate, complete and up to date
  • Define and maintain business policies, standards and procedures relating to data classification, labelling, retention, archiving and disposal
  • Define business requirements for data backup, recovery and resilience, ensuring appropriate controls are in place and validating that backup and recovery processes are operating effectively
  • Monitor backup execution, perform backup integrity validation and support the ongoing review and optimisation of data protection arrangements
  • Support the management and review of data access controls, helping to ensure that users have access to the information required for their role whilst protecting sensitive information from inappropriate access
  • Work with business stakeholders to ensure data governance controls are understood, adopted and consistently applied across the domain
  • Support data audit, monitoring and compliance activities, including access reviews, classification reviews and evidence gathering
  • Work with Data Architects, Data Engineers, Information & Knowledge Management teams and business stakeholders to ensure governance requirements are translated into operational and technical controls
