Job Description:
Job Title: Lead Content Designer (Contract)
Outside IR35
Location: Fully Remote (UK-based)
Duration: 6-week initial contract (Discovery and Alpha)
Day Rate: £500 per day
We are seeking an experienced Lead Content Designer to join a rapid-turnaround digital project for a UK Government department.
This contract covers a high-impact, 6-week initial Discovery and Alpha phase. You will be joining an agile, multi-disciplinary team tasked with understanding user needs, mapping complex service domains, and prototyping clear, accessible content solutions aligned with the GDS Service Standard.
Because of the condensed timeline, prior experience leading quick-turnaround, outcomes-focused Discovery phases within the UK Government or public sector is essential. You will need to arrive ready to dive into research, synthesize findings alongside user researchers, and translate insights into actionable content strategies at speed.
Responsibilities
Lead the content strategy and design across a 6-week sprint covering Discovery and rapid Alpha prototyping.
Collaborate closely with User Researchers, Interaction Designers, and Product Managers to define user needs, domain language, and pain points.
Map complex journeys and draft, iterate, and test accessible content concepts.
Ensure all content approaches align with the GDS Service Standard, GOV.UK style guidelines, and accessibility regulations (WCAG 2.2 AAA standard where appropriate).
Prepare compelling content artifacts and evidence to support assessment milestones and handover/continuation phases.
Skills and experience:
Proven UK Public Sector / GDS Experience: Direct experience delivering content design inside UK government departments, agencies, or arms-length bodies.
Rapid Discovery Expertise: A track record in outcomes-focused, fast-paced Discovery pieces where you've helped distill complex policy or service domains into clear user insights under tight deadlines.
GDS Alignment: Deep familiarity with the Service Standard, GOV.UK Design System, and accessibility practices.
Agile and Collaborative: Able to work effectively in fast-moving, cross-functional agile teams without needing hand-holding.
Stakeholder Management: Confident engaging with policy teams, subject matter experts, and senior stakeholders to align content decisions with policy intent.
