CONTRACT AI BACKEND ENGINEER

We're looking for an experienced AI Backend Engineer to join a forward-thinking engineering team where Agentic AI is becoming a core part of software delivery.

Strong commercial experience with C# and .NET remains essential, but what really sets this opportunity apart is the chance to help shape how AI is adopted across the engineering function.

We're looking for someone who doesn't just use Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor or OpenAI to write code-they understand how to build effective AI-assisted engineering practices that improve quality, consistency and delivery across an entire team.

Working closely with the Principal Engineer and Principal Architect, you'll remain hands-on building backend services whilst helping define the standards, tooling and approaches that enable engineers to get the very best from modern AI development platforms.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

As an AI Backend Engineer, you will:

• Build scalable backend applications and REST APIs using C# and .NET
• Champion the adoption of Agentic AI across the engineering function
• Coach engineers on best-practice AI-assisted software development
• Establish effective prompting strategies and reusable AI workflows
• Define and maintain project context through documentation such as AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, custom commands and shared engineering guidance
• Configure and optimise AI agents to improve software delivery and engineering productivity
• Run AI pairing sessions, code reviews and knowledge-sharing workshops
• Review, validate and improve AI-generated code to ensure quality, maintainability and security
• Work closely with the Principal Engineer and Principal Architect to ensure AI-assisted delivery aligns with engineering standards and platform architecture
• Deliver secure, scalable and well-tested backend services using modern C# and .NET practices

WE NEED YOU TO HAVE...

• Strong commercial experience developing backend applications using C# and .NET
• Experience designing and developing REST APIs
• Hands-on commercial experience using Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, OpenAI or similar AI development platforms
• Experience introducing or championing AI-assisted software engineering within development teams
• Strong understanding of Agentic AI concepts, prompting strategies and AI engineering workflows
• Experience creating reusable AI project context, commands and documentation (such as AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md or equivalent)
• Passion for coaching and enabling other engineers to maximise AI tooling safely and effectively
• Strong understanding of software architecture and engineering best practice
• Experience working within Agile engineering teams

IT WOULD BE GREAT IF YOU ALSO HAVE...

• Azure or AWS experience
• CI/CD and DevOps knowledge
• Experience implementing engineering standards and developer tooling
• Prompt engineering and AI workflow optimisation
• Experience evaluating emerging AI tools and recommending best practice
• Experience mentoring software engineers
