Graphic User Interface Designer at SoCode Recruitment, Cambridge, £Contract Rate

Contract Description

SoCode are pleased to represent a medical device company, in their search for a Senior GUI / Human Factors Designer to take full ownership of the user interface design for a safety-critical touchscreen platform. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will define and deliver a production-ready design system and touchscreen interface from concept through to validated, developer-ready output.

*This is an initial 3-month contract engagement - OUTSIDE IR35

Why would you want to join?

  • A genuinely rare opportunity to own a safety-critical medical device interface end to end, with your work going directly into a clinical environment.
  • Small, highly capable team with real influence over design direction from day one.
  • Fast-moving, well-resourced startup environment
  • Cambridge-based with flexibility, embedded enough to collaborate closely with hardware and engineering teams.

The desired Senior GUI / Human Factors Designer will have the following experience:

  • Figma to an expert level, including building scalable component libraries, design tokens, interactive prototypes, and developer-ready handoff documentation.
  • Designing touchscreen interfaces for constrained, hardware-bound environments. Medical devices, automotive HMI, aviation, industrial automation, or equivalent safety-critical domains is essential.
  • Building design systems from scratch and taking them through to production, not simply contributing to an existing one.
  • Formal or applied Human Factors knowledge, ideally with exposure to IEC 62366 or equivalent usability engineering standards in a regulated environment.
  • Operating as a sole contributor at senior or principal level, with the confidence to advise stakeholders and make independent design decisions.
  • Candidates with direct medical device or surgical interface experience, or a background in usability engineering and FDA/CE regulatory submissions, will be considerably favoured although this is not a deal breaker.

What will they be doing?:

  • Own the end-to-end GUI design for a safety-critical clinical touchscreen system, from initial discovery and constraints analysis through to validated, production-ready output.
  • Design and build a scalable design system and component library in Figma, establishing consistent patterns for a hardware-constrained touchscreen environment.
  • Develop high-fidelity interactive prototypes and overlay designs, iterating rapidly based on feedback from engineering, clinical, and regulatory stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely with software, firmware, mechanical, and systems engineers to ensure design decisions are grounded in hardware constraints and clinical workflow realities.
  • Contribute to usability planning and human factors documentation in support of regulatory submissions.
