The opportunity
We're looking for a hands-on, intellectually curious Data Analyst/Modeler to play a central role in an exciting, high-visibility data initiative for a leading pet insurance and veterinary services business.
Our client has access to an established US-built veterinary care ontology. A rich, structured knowledge model covering animal medical conditions, treatments, and pharmaceuticals, and the relationships between them. Your mission: assess whether this US ontology is fit for purpose for the UK market and help shape it into the foundation of the client's long-term UK and European data solution.
This is a rare chance to work at the intersection of data modelling, knowledge graphs, and real-world veterinary medicine on a project with senior leadership visibility and genuine strategic importance.
What you'll be doing
- Getting deep into the source dataset: interrogating, profiling, and understanding the structure and content of an existing US veterinary ontology/taxonomy
- Analysing and validating how well that ontology maps to the UK market - identifying gaps, mismatches, and areas needing localisation
- Acting as the bridge between the US solution provider and UK veterinary specialists - facilitating workshops and discussions, and translating between clinical concepts and data structures
- Performing semantic searches and exploratory analysis across graph-based and relational data
- Contributing to data modelling decisions that will shape the client's longer-term target solution
- Helping leadership answer the key strategic question: can this ontology be lifted, adapted, and owned as the basis for the UK business going forward
Expect a split of roughly 70% analysis/30% data modelling.
What we're looking for
Must have:
- Strong, demonstrable data analysis skills with the ability to get hands-on quickly in an unfamiliar dataset
- Experience with Neo4j and graph data structures (the source system is graph-based)
- Solid understanding of taxonomies, ontologies, and hierarchical/relational data modelling
- Strong SQL skills - some of the data may live in standard relational tables
- Excellent communication and facilitation skills - you'll be the connective tissue between technical teams and clinical subject-matter experts on both sides of the Atlantic
- The ability to rapidly grasp domain concepts (in this case, medical/veterinary, conditions, treatments, pharmaceuticals) and connect them to data structures
Nice to have:
- Experience with graph query languages (Cypher, GraphQL or similar)
- Prior exposure to medical, clinical, pharmaceutical, or insurance data
- Experience working with knowledge graphs or semantic data models
- Comfort working in a loosely defined brief, shaping the role as you go
Who will thrive in this role
We need someone flexible and pragmatic, a "muck in and get it done" type who is equally comfortable interrogating a graph database, sketching a data model, or leading a conversation with a veterinary specialist.
If you enjoy ambiguity, fast-moving projects, and being trusted to figure things out, you'll fit right in.
