The Opportunity We're supporting a large-scale technology modernisation programme within an organisation that provides an essential public service to millions of consumers across the UK.
As part of this programme, they're looking for an experienced Windows Server Migration Engineer to help move critical services away from legacy Windows Server 2012 environments and onto modern server platforms.
This isn't simply a lift-and-shift exercise. You'll be working across a broad estate, engaging with application owners, infrastructure teams and third-party suppliers to ensure systems are migrated successfully with minimal disruption to the services
Technology sits at the heart of their ability to deliver that service efficiently and securely, and a significant infrastructure upgrade programme is now underway to ensure their platforms remain resilient, supported and fit for the future.
The Role
The project team are responsible for planning, coordinating and delivering server migration activities across a varied application and infrastructure estate.
Some systems are straightforward. Others have dependencies that have built up over many years and require a more considered approach.
The successful candidate will be comfortable navigating both.
You'll be involved in:
- Planning and coordinating Windows Server migration activities
- Validating new server environments before migration takes place
- Supporting application installations, configuration and testing
- Identifying technical dependencies, risks and migration challenges
- Supporting cutovers and post-migration validation activities
- Troubleshooting infrastructure and application issues during migration
- Working closely with internal teams, software vendors and managed service providers
- Producing technical documentation, migration plans and handover materials
The Person
We're looking for someone who has been through similar infrastructure transformation programmes before and understands what can go wrong, how to avoid it and how to keep projects moving forward.
You'll have experience of most or all of the following:
- Windows Server migrations and upgrade programmes
- Windows Server 2012, 2016, 2019, 2022 or newer
- Active Directory, DNS, Group Policy and IIS
- Application migration and compatibility testing
- Infrastructure validation and environment readiness
- Working with third-party suppliers and support partners
- Producing technical documentation and implementation plans
Experience of Azure or hybrid cloud environments would be beneficial but isn't essential.
