About the Role

We are looking for an experienced AI Engineer to support a major transformation programme focused on moving traditional, legacy technology platforms into modern, cloud‑aligned, AI‑enabled environments.

This role requires someone confident working across Azure, VMware, and legacy infrastructure to identify upgrade pathways and design AI‑driven solutions that streamline, automate and modernise existing systems.

This is a hands‑on engineering contract suited to someone who has previously delivered modernisation or platform transformation projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyse legacy platforms (traditional on‑prem, monolithic systems, aging VMware estates) to identify modernisation and AI‑enablement opportunities.
  • Design and implement AI/ML solutions that enhance, optimise, or replace outdated processes.
  • Work closely with infrastructure teams to modernise VMware‑based workloads and integrate with Azure cloud services.
  • Develop transformation roadmaps covering migration, automation, and AI‑driven optimisation.
  • Build and deploy AI models into production environments hosted on Azure.
  • Integrate AI models with existing infrastructure using APIs, microservices, or event‑driven patterns.
  • Provide technical guidance across cloud, AI, automation, and platform engineering teams.
  • Support continuous improvement of modernised environments and AI performance tuning.

Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as an AI Engineer / ML Engineer / Platform Modernisation Engineer.
  • Strong background in Azure cloud services, especially AI/ML offerings (Azure ML, Cognitive Services, Data Lake, Functions, Kubernetes Service).
  • Hands‑on experience with VMware platforms including vSphere, ESXi, and virtualised legacy workloads.
  • Strong understanding of legacy architectures and how to transition them to modern, cloud‑ready states.
  • Proficiency in Python and modern ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit‑learn).
  • Experience integrating AI into production platforms via APIs, microservices, or containerisation.
  • Familiarity with Docker/Kubernetes, cloud automation, and modern CI/CD practices.
  • Ability to operate effectively in complex brownfield environments.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience migrating VMware workloads into Azure (e.g., Azure VMware Solution).
  • Knowledge of MLOps, infrastructure as code, and modern DevOps practices.
  • Experience with RPA, intelligent automation, or LLM‑based workflow modernisation.
  • Strong ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to non‑technical stakeholders.
