We are currently looking for an experienced SQL Data Engineer to support the ongoing development and stability of a critical data platform. This role sits within an established technology team and focuses on BAU data engineering, database optimisation and ongoing data migration activity.

The successful contractor will combine strong SQL development with hands on DBA capability, ensuring databases remain secure, performant and reliable while supporting continuous improvements to the wider data estate.

This is an excellent opportunity for a pragmatic engineer who enjoys working on live production systems while helping evolve data architecture over time.

• Design, build and maintain SQL-based data solutions supporting business critical applications

• Develop and optimise stored procedures, queries and data access patterns

• Work with JSON and semi-structured data within relational databases

• Support ongoing data migration and modernisation initiatives

• Validate data quality, reconciliation and completeness during migration activities

• Manage database performance tuning, indexing and optimisation

• Ensure operational stability including backup, restore and recovery processes

• Use Python for automation, data validation and processing tasks

• Support controlled database releases and CI/CD pipelines

• Contribute to improved documentation, standards and engineering practices

• 5-10 years experience working with SQL Server or similar relational databases

• Strong SQL development skills including complex queries and stored procedures

• Proven DBA experience within live BAU environments

• Experience handling JSON or semi structured data in SQL platforms

• Strong data modelling knowledge (logical, physical, normalised and denormalised)

• Working knowledge of Python for data engineering or automation

• Experience supporting data migration programmes alongside BAU work

• Pragmatic, delivery focused approach with strong attention to data quality and reliability

• Experience with cloud data platforms (Azure SQL/Managed Instance/PaaS databases)

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines for database deployments

• Exposure to data governance, security and access control

• Experience working in regulated or data sensitive environments

• Familiarity with Azure DevOps
