Job Summary
Machine-Enabled insights are likely to be a key component of future combat system processing. Advances in processing offer the potential to augment operator performance and improve operator and command team situational awareness when conducting surveillance tasks.
The purpose of this task is to monitor and identify anomalous behaviour or real works entities from within the huge volumes of sensor data information delivered by future combat systems to the command team.
Responsibilities & Duties
For a submarine, the primary sensor is the passive sonar sensor systems which can track large numbers of sonar contacts in bearing at significant ranges, 360 degrees around the submarine.
Other sensor data such as AIS, ES and optronics may be available depending on the posture of the platform.
Spotting anomalous behaviour in both the trajectories of the sensor contacts, in relation to ‘normal’ vessel behaviour, and the station of the contacts relative to known features, schedules or forecasts can be difficult for the human operator when faced with a large data set, extended durations, or a ‘busy’ scenario. Identifying anomalous behaviour may provide advance warning of a threat, reducing risk and providing the submarine with tactical advantage.
